Struisbaai Beaches

Imagine a seemingly never-ending stretch of pearly white sand, with the ocean current washing up on the shore on one side and the verdant mountains serving as the perfect backdrop. Struisbaai boasts a 14-kilometre stretch of pristine white sand beach, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and beach games. It is a great spot for both shore anglers and fishing boats. Then comes the season and holidaymakers set out picnics, build sandcastles, play games and swim to their hearts delight. All that is required is a bit of sunshine and the day will be perfect! Struisbaai beach is popular for kite-surfing, bodyboarding, and surfing.

The main beach is but a 3 minute drive from Cape Creek Cottage. Closer even, you can access a stretch of private beach from form our holiday home in Langezandt Fishermen's Village. It's only a 5 minute stroll through the lovely estate to reach the beach, known as Langezandt beach (although it forms part of the long stretch of Struisbaai beach), where you can relax on the dunes and swim in the lovely turquoise waters. If you're visiting in the later half of the year, keep a close eye on the deeper waters and you may spot whales. Die Plaat is another beach area to visit for a nice stretch of flat beach. To get there, from Cape Creek Cottage, take the R319 in the direction of Bredasdorp. You'll see Earth Restaurant on your left after about 4 minutes of driving. Take a right turn just after Earth Restaurant and continue driving for another 4 minutes until you reach the beach area known as "Die Plaat".

Die Plaat at Struisbaai offers excellent kite surfing conditions during South-West winds. To get to the kite surfing launch area from Cape Creek Cottage, take a short drive on the Main Road and turn left at the sign marked “Strand/Beach”, located on your left. There is a nice grassy area here at the Struisbaai Promenade, great for rigging, as well as plenty of parking. Whale Watching

Breaching, lobtailing, spy hopping, and sailing are some the antics you can witness in these waters from July to December. The Southern Right whales’ journey to the coastline of South Africa to mate, calve and, as many believe, to have some fun! The curious creatures have hearts to match their colossal size and their endearing nature is sure to steal yours. During this time, you can spot mostly mothers and their calves wading through the water. Stand in awe as they swim merrily by with a wave of a fin or a tail to slap the water in exaltation. If you’re lucky, you may witness the several tons emerge from the water and land with unrivalled force.

One of the reasons the whales are so active and ready for play is because they were feeding in the Antarctic for six months and are now enjoying a vacation. They will swim right up to a boat to quench their curious nature and get a closer look at you, which leaves people awestruck by the sheer magnificence. It is a sight that will stick in your memory forever, so don’t miss out on this incredible attraction.

Some of the best places for land-based whale watching are located in the Cape Agulhas region. Agulhas National Park provides a range of great vantage points overlooking the coastline, including good spots for whale watching. Similarly, De Mond Nature Reserve and the dunes at Koppie Alleen in De Hoop Nature Reserve are prime whale watching spots. Cape Sea Safaris offers a 2-hour long whale watching boat trip, departing daily form Struisbaai Harbour during the months of August and November. The trips start at R1,250 per person, and you can book on their website.

Hiking

The Two Oceans and Rasperpunt Hiking Trails are located in the Agulhas National Park, a reserve filled with naturally occurring fynbos and a variety of wildlife. The Two Oceans trail takes you along the coast, through stunning nature and up to a viewpoint with a breathtaking view of the ocean. The trail starts at the Agulhas Rest Camp, and loops for 10.5km. You also have the option to take shorter routes, to walk only 4.5km or 3km. The Rasperpunt Hiking Trail begins at the Meishu Maru Shipwreck. You’ll walk 5.5km over sand, stones, and steep inclines, and see many points of interest before finding yourself back at the shipwreck.

From Cape Creek Cottage, take a short 10 minute drive to the entrance of L'Agulhas. As you drive into sunny L’Agulhas you might be surprised, possibly alarmed, by the ghosts painted on signboards, rocks, and lamp posts. The white spooky marks are the pointers on the Ghost Trail (Spookdraai Trail). For those looking for more than gorgeous views, fresh air and a bit of holiday exercise the Ghost Trail adds a whole new element to hiking! It will take you through winding streets, along the coast and up a zigzagging path over a hill and down again. The Spookdraai hiking trail takes in various historical landmarks in the area, and the ghost stories give the trail that edge. The Spookdraai hike starts at Spookdraai (Ghost Corner) at the entrance to the town of L’Agulhas. The hike is well signposted from the entrance to L'Agulhas, with around 30 different markers along the route to indicate your way. Pick up a map from the Cape Aghulhas Tourist Office at the L’Agulhas Lighthouse. The map adds to your walk by providing a description for each of the viewing points.

The Grootberg hiking trail is located near Napier, and the starting point is around 50 minutes' drive from Cape Creek Cottage. The route is moderately challenging, and hikers can expect to take about 2 and a half to 3 and a half hours to complete the 8km circular trail around the summit of Grootberg. The trail is not well-signed, so be sure to have a map on hand when you start the hike. Stop for a quick photo at Sopieshoogte, a marked boulder at the halfway mark of the trail.

There are many other routes in the area, too many to mention here in fact, including the Sterna Hiking Trail in Arniston, the Heuningberg Routes in Bredasdorp, and the Perlemoen Trail in Pearly Bay. Visit the Tourist Information Centre at the Caltex in Struisbaai or the Tourist Office at the L'Agulhas Lighthouse for more information and trail maps.

Struisbaai Harbour

Struisbaai · 5 minutes' drive

Struisbaai harbour is home to a few massive black stingrays weighing well over 120 kg, as well as many smaller stingrays that come to feed on fish offal in the shallow waters. The smaller stingrays in the shallow water can be approached and fed with pilchards. Just watch out for the tails! One of these short-tail stingrays, named Parrie, has been visiting the shallows in the harbour for around 30 years, making him somewhat of a town mascot. Locals speak affectionately of Parrie, who has grown so accustomed to the friendly nature of the townsfolk that people can now buy pilchards from the harbour and feed it to him. He was initially attracted by the morsels returning fishermen would throw out to him. Now he associates the noise of the boat’s engine with their return. Parrie is the largest, and likely the oldest, of the stingrays at Struisbaai harbour.

Pack your fishing rod and try your luck fishing for South Africa's national fish, the Galjoen. The ideal times for fishing at the harbour are at high tide and at night, with the major fish species to target being Shad, Kob, and Spotted Grunter. The harbour wall is welcome to all ages, and is the perfect place to share your interest with other anglers. Additionally, the colourful fishing boats make for great photos!

L’Agulhas Lighthouse

L'Agulhas · 15 minutes' drive

This town also houses the second oldest working lighthouse in South Africa. Many ships met their doom along this coastline from the late 1600s to the 1800s, leading to the start of construction on the now famous lighthouse. The Cape Agulhas Lighthouse was completed in 1849 and declared a National Monument in 1973 thanks to its momentous role in sea travel. During the day, the L’Agulhas Lighthouse is open to visitors who wish to browse through the lighthouse museum. For magnificent views of the ocean and coastline, climb the three sets of stairs to the lookout at the top of the lighthouse. Before reaching the lookout, you'll climb an additional steep ladder and duck through a low door. The steps are quite steep, but the view from the top makes the climb worth it! When visiting the lighthouse, it's best to park below the lighthouse, next to the road and sea. Follow the wooden walkway up to the lighthouse and walk around the building to find the main entrance. Access to the top of the lighthouse costs R40 per person.

The Southernmost Point of Africa

L'Agulhas · 15 minutes' drive

Visit the southernmost tip of the continent in L'Agulhas, a nearby village with many quaint shops. Where two oceans collide in a wild display of tumultuous currents and jagged rocky edges, you will find the southernmost point of Africa marked by a stone. This is where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet and people from all over the world journey to this area to be the southernmost person standing in this significant location for just a moment in time. The sharp winds and raw energy of the environment will make you feel like you are truly standing on the edge of the earth. There are boardwalks and benches around the area, perfect for a stroll and taking in more of this stunning area. You’ll likely spot a variety of birds too.

The history of this area includes many tales of ships crashing to their doom against the ominous jagged rocks and of foreign survivors that eventually called this village home. There is still one decaying ship that stands defiant to the merciless ocean, standing like a solemn monument to the sailors that lost their lives. Visitors can learn more about the history of the area during a visit to the L'Agulhas Lighthouse. Nearby, you’ll also find the Map of Africa monument – a huge three-dimensional map of Africa. The monument honours the continent and its most southern point, featuring various African landmarks which can be identified on the map. Bredasdorp · 20 minutes' drive

Walk through South Africa’s only shipwreck museum, located in Bredasdorp. Discover a gloomy, yet romantic, history of the 150 ships that came to their doom along the rocky reefs of the Agulhas coastline. The Shipwreck Museum tells countless stories of the ships that sank in the area, and the inception of the ‘women and children first’ protocol implemented on ships during emergency evacuations.

The first known shipwreck occurred in 1673 and since then, ships representing a host of different nationalities have washed up on the rocky shore. One can find stories of these ships, as well as the many original artefacts that have been preserved, such as portholes, jewellery, coins, figureheads, anchors, purfume bottles, and even canons. Learn about famous shipwrecks like the Queen of Thames, the Arniston, the Zoetendal, and the Birkenhead, as well as the many quirky tales surrounding these ships. In the garden, there are real ship anchors, some hundreds of years old. There are also dedicated areas which exhibit scenes and household items from earlier periods, including life-size mannequins (some of which are slightly creepy) dressed in period clothing, and farming equipment. You will feel as if you have embarked on an adventure yourself once you emerge from this museum. The museum is open on weekdays from 9am, with a small entrance fee, payable in cash, upon visiting.

Waenhuiskrans Cave

Arniston · 35 minutes' drive

Following the breadcrumbs of rock pools all along the Arniston shoreline will take you to a hidden place, sculpted by the sea itself. Holding the origin of half of the town’s name, the Waenhuiskrans Cave is a natural wonder not to be missed. As you enter Arniston, there is a signpost directing you to the cave, and a road that leads to the beach and a parking lot. From there, you will need to take a walk, climb over rocks, and get your feet wet to get inside the cave. The walk is well worth it. The cave is a big tourist attraction, and you are likely to find someone on their way back, who can point out how to reach the cave.

The name Waenhuiskrans translates to “wagon house cliff”, originating from the idea that the cave is so large that a wagon pulled by a team of oxen could turn around inside the cave. Naturally carved by the relentless ocean and tides, the enormous cave holds a sense of wonder and wisdom. The views out to sea from within the cave are breathtaking. Come and see through the eyes of the long-forgotten travelers that looked out from within the belly of this enchanting cave. The cave can only be visited during low tide, so be sure to keep an eye on the time to not be caught by the high tide.

Cradled in the area known as the Agulhas Plain and nurtured by the coming together of the Indian and Atlantic oceans, the Agulhas National Park is home to a unique combination of biodiversity and natural beauty. The Park showcases a variety of rare and beautiful plant and animal life endemic to the area. Spot the illusive African Black Oystercatcher or Damara Tern while enjoying one of the walking or hiking trails in the reserve or cast your eyes to the horizon and watch the graceful Southern Right Whales in the ocean. The unique lowland Fynbos found in the area makes for an ideal home to different species and Zebras, Baboons, various reptiles, and Bontebok can be seen grazing freely throughout the reserve. Including various animal species, unique Fynbos and flowers that bloom between May and September, stunning landscapes and the southern tip of Africa monument, the Agulhas National Park is a true South African gem.

Various shipwrecks, including the Zoetendal, Birkenhead, and Armiston can be found along the Agulhas coast. The wreck of the Meisho Maru number 38 is visible on the shores of Cape Agulhas. You can reach the shipwreck on a 20 minute walk or a 3 minute drive from the Southernmost Point of Africa monument. From the Meisho Maru, you can start Rasperpunt Hiking Trail - a 5.5km circular trail. Visitors can also enjoy The Two Oceans Hiking Trail which is 10.5km in full, but offers alternative routes of 3km and 4.5km for those looking for a shorter hike. Bird enthusiasts may want to pick up a comprehensive Birding List from the tourist office at the lighthouse, and keep an eye out for the wide range of bird species in the area.

South African citizens can gain access to the park for R52 (adults) or R26 (kids) per day, while International visitors will be charged R208 per adult and R104 per child for a day visit.

De Hoop Nature Reserve is home to a variety of mammal species, such as Bontebok, Cape Mountain Zebra, Eland, and Rhebok. The park is known for its range of birds - more than 260 bird species – including Cape Vultures, Fish-Eagles, Flamingos, Waders, Cape Sugarbirds, Caspian Terns, Pelicans, Cardinal Woodpeckers, African Black Oystercatchers and Orangebreasted Sunbirds. The ocean is home to a variety of fish, and visitors should be on the lookout to try and spot dolphins, whales, and seals. It's important to know that no fishing is allowed in De Hoop, as the whole coastline of De Hoop is a Marine Protected Area.

The reserve's gates open at 7am and conservation fees are payable upon your arrival. Visitors are welcome to explore the park on their own, whether that be by car, by foot, or on a bike, and can stop at the Fig Tree Restaurant for breakfast or lunch. Alternatively, venture to Koppie Alleen to enjoy a picnic on the dunes and swim in the nearby sea. De Hoop is great for land-based whale watching, especially from the tall dunes near Koppie Alleen.

There are a variety of guided tours available, including walking tours, cycling tours, birdwatching, marine walks, game drives, and a meeting with endangered Cape Vultures on a viewing platform. Visitors can also experience many of these activities on their own. The park offers a variety of hiking and cycling trails, and birdwatching spots are abundant. The shortest hiking trail is the 5km long “red” route, starting at the restaurant. Pamphlets and maps are available at reception, including information on the various other trails in the reserve. The park also has 4 mountain biking routes, and you can hire a bike if you don’t have your own.

If you’d like to learn about the wildlife and plants (or if you just fancy a safari drive), book a guided afternoon game drive. The guided drive will take you along some private roads, in an open safari vehicle, to view the animals of the reserve. Your guide will tell you about each animal you come across and point out many of the rare plant species on your way, including limestone fynbos, proteas, ericas, restios, geophytes (bulbs) and leucodendrons. Many of the plants in the park are considered rare, and some are only found in the park.

The centre has an auditorium with a large TV that provides a live viewing of what is happening in the rehabilitation area. Remember to stop by the gift shop to pick up your own adorable stuffed penguin.
